BLADERUNNER™
We adapted the Rodale Institute’s Chevron Pattern Blade concept for Australian conditions, creating the BLADERUNNER™ range. The blade is fixed to a barrel with a twisted pitch, ensuring constant contact and pressure with organic material. As the barrel rotates, pressure splits from the centre outwards, delivering positive effects across biomass and vegetation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Machinery and rocks don't generally mix that well in work or social situations. Smaller rocks (say the size of cricket balls) are fine. We have engineered around this problem with replaceable blades and a bisalloy blade option, however the responsibility of the wear and tear of a machine ultimately comes down to the operator and how well they know the field/paddock and what speed they are willing to go - or not go.
-
Depending on the application and how comfortable the ride in the tractor is or isn't, typical speeds for crimping, around 10km, mulching pasture; faster than 10 km. The ideal speed is the speed that matches conditions and what is doing the best job. As long as the machine looks stable and smooth and you're comfortable in the seat and you're doing a good job - go for it.
-
The 4500 a Landcruiser or similar 4WD will suffice. The 6000; 80HP or more is perfect. Formation 160hp or more is perfect. FLD-12 180-200 horsepower and 3 hydraulic remotes is ideal.
-
Great; within reason. We have tried and tested laying over and snapping woody weeds at the crown or base of the plant. As long as the plants are snapable and the trunk is within a diameter of roughly 1 inch or less then it should be effective. This can however vary from plant to plant. As a test if you can lay over, stand on and with your body weight effectively snap a woody weed or sapling then you should expect the BLADERUNNER™ to do the same thing. Young whippy seedlings can be tricky; crimp rolling may prove ineffective as they might stand back up.
-
Although plenty of our machines are used in managing grass's the best results on grasses are on long and rank grasses. Weight in the barrel will be more effective and timing may also be key for best results.
-
Yes, our machines are used in stubble management. Canola stubbles are an easy job and we offer a sharpened blade for better results. Any other stubbles that are thicker in stalk and left high our machines will eat up/ chop and lay on the ground with minimal disturbance to the soil- which is key for breaking stubbles down further. Wheat stubbles can be ropey and harder to get on the ground but if the stalk is left for natural breakdown to start occurring this will help the BLADERUNNER™ do an effective job.
-
Tussocks and grass clumps are a common problem and are becoming a more widespread problem in certain areas of Australia. The BLADERUNNER™ relies on contact from the blade with the earth with the biomass in between to be effective. If the roller is lifted one end by running over a clump of grass this will then affect the results along the whole length of the barrel. I have suggested to clients previously that the first problem that needs addressing are these clumps which are creating a vicious cycle of unproductivity. Once these clumps are addressed the management of stock grazing and utilisation of a BLADERUNNER™ together could be beneficial for creating better spread of feet, with improved paddock feed accessibility and then overall productivity.
-
You have done a lot of blade running! Our blades are replaceable and a new set can be bolted on. Typically speaking though, you shouldn't expect to be wearing blades out seasonally or really at all, especially if there is biomass in between the blades and the ground. Naturally, there will be wear and tear on blades, but this is why we offer replaceable blades which are quite inexpensive to change out.
-
Two options; One; replace it. Or, 2 take it off and get the bend out. Because of the design of the blades and how they are formed around the barrel they are very durable and typically quite hard to bend (however never say never).
-
Crimping cover crops; 10mm flat edge blade. Stubble crunching; 6mm Bisalloy sharpened. Pasture improvement; depending on area and what you want to eradicate one of our team can assist you with this.
-
Slashing and mulching are effective, but the BLADERUNNER™ differs significantly. Have you ever noticed what slashing and mulching do to your biomass? If you mulch then get a decent rain even you have probably asked yourself "where did all that biomass go?" and "why is my paddock so bare?"
Mulching disintegrates biomass and negatively impacts on your soil health and coverage.
Mulching and slashing will reset grazing paddocks to an even playing field, taking out all plants, desirable and otherwise, therefore giving all plants the same opportunity to grow back. This can influence reshooting of the problematic weeds that were causing the problems, concern and under productivity in the first place. The long of the short; use your biomass don't loose your biomass!
Blade running requires less horsepower, parts, consumables, and running costs compared to mulching or slashing.
-
Obviously the less the better, who wants to be sitting in the tractor all day every day? If you are one of these people who do enjoy this - apologies - go for it, but what we are trying to influence with our machinery is the idea of a new management strategy to go with it.
Using your stock, their feet and their natural fertiliser to do the heavy lifting for you, is key to improving the productivity of your country. So lets say for example you are wanting better turnover and productivity of your country, there is a lot of feed in front of you that is becoming rank and under utilised and your stock are not interested in this feed as it lacks tastiness, protein and access.
You can use the BLADERUNNER™ to give better accessibility of your country back to your stock to spread your numbers over your grazing areas, trample and then turn over this unproductive feed to turn your country back into production. This strategy can be done both before pushing stock into a paddock, or after to reset and give your paddock the best opportunity for production moving forward. We encourage our clients to think of the benefits, utilize the machine, look at the results and then adjust their strategy around this. Same goes with any pasture management strategy, whether it's eradicating weeds etc. What we want to do is maximise production with minimal expenditure and effort - and if we do this organically then this will help us with the best results for the future and more money in the hip pocket to boot.

We do not hire machines out anymore. There is however, huge potential and a gigantic gap in the market so feel free to do so yourself!
